This week is for you

Going to a leisure centre for the first time can feel scary. That’s normal. Lots of people feel the same. You don’t need to be fit, and you don’t need special clothes. Just come along.

I don’t know what to do

Ask our staff. They will show you around and help you.

I’m not fit enough

That’s OK. Go slowly and stop when you want to. Everyone starts somewhere.

People will look at me

Most people are busy with their own exercise. Many of them were new once too.

I don’t have the right clothes

Wear clothes you can move in, and trainers. For swimming, bring a swimming costume and a towel.

I don’t want to go alone

Bring a friend or someone from your family. Everyone aged 16 or over who lives in Hounslow can get their own free pass.

Start small. 10 minutes of walking or swimming is a great first step.

Why exercise?

How exercise helps you

You don’t need to do a lot. A little exercise, done often, can make a big difference to how you feel.

  • Mood

    Feel happier

Exercise can help with stress and worry. It can also lower your risk of depression by up to 30%.

  • Sleep

    Sleep better

Being active can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

  • Energy

    Feel less tired

Moving more gives you more energy, so everyday jobs feel easier.

  • Health

    A healthier body

Exercise lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

  • People

    Meet people

Classes and swimming are a good way to meet people who live near you.

  • Confidence

    Feel proud

Trying something new feels good. You might surprise yourself.

A little is good. More is better.

This is advice from the UK’s top doctors. Even short bits of activity all count.
